CERN announces particle consistent Higgs boson

In an historic presentation, CMS and ATLAS both announced results consistent with a Higgs Boson at 126 GeV or thereabouts. Although the results are preliminary and a lot more work needs to be done, people generally believed they had found the long-sought particle.

Peter Higgs himself was present, looking slightly bewildered and wiping tears from his eyes, saying he was astonished that the particle had been found during his lifetime. More details from:

It was impossible not to feel emotional at the excitement in the Auditorium as people clapped “like a football match”.

It would have been wonderful if I could have obtained an iota of publicity from this event, but never mind. The Cosmic Monopole is, after all, just a story, and insignificant in comparison with the effort and achievement of thousands of scientists over 28 years of development.

Congratulations to everyone!
